Colorado Supreme Court to hear arguments in transgender cake case

The Colorado Supreme Court will hear arguments Tuesday in a lawsuit against a Christian baker who refused to make a cake celebrating a gender transition. It's one of three cases in Colorado that have pitted LGBTQ+ civil rights against First Amendment rights. Two of those cases have involved Jack Phillips, a baker who in 2012 refused to bake a cake for a gay couple’s wedding. Phillips partially prevailed before the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018. He now is being sued by Autumn Scardina, a transgender woman for whom Phillips refused to bake a cake commemorating her transition. The Colorado Court of Appeals has sided with Scardina.

Supporters of bringing the Chiefs to Kansas have narrowed their plan and are promising tax cuts

Kansas lawmakers hoping to lure the Kansas City Chiefs from Missouri are narrowing their proposal for encouraging the Super Bowl champions to build a new stadium and linking the proposal to a plan for broad tax cuts. Those moves are designed to win over skeptical colleagues. The Legislature expected to consider the stadium proposal during a special session set to convene Tuesday. The measure would allow the state to issue bonds to help the Chiefs and Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals finance new stadiums in Kansas. Supporters backed away from allowing the bonds to cover all stadium construction costs, and they're promising that tax cuts are a larger priority.

Georgia GOP to choose congressional nominees, with candidates including man convicted in Jan. 6 riot

Georgia Republicans are settling two congressional nominations in runoffs Tuesday. Chuck Hand is a construction supervisor who was convicted for illegally demonstrating inside the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. He's running against former U.S. Education Department official Wayne Johnson in southwest Georgia's 2nd District. In the 3rd District, former Donald Trump aide Brian Jack is hoping to ride the ex-president's endorsem*nt to a victory over former state Senate Majority Leader Mike Dugan. That's an open seat, because Republican Drew Ferguson is stepping down. Democrats will choose their candidate to face Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene in the November general election. Turnout is likely to be low Tuesday.

When violence and trauma visit American places, a complex question follows: Demolish, or press on?

Parkland. Uvalde. Columbine. Sandy Hook. A supermarket in Buffalo. A church in South Carolina. A synagogue in Pittsburgh. When violence comes to a public place, as it does all too often in our era, a delicate question lingers afterward: What should be done with the buildings where blood was shed? This question has been answered differently over the years. In addition to intense emotion, other factors in the decision-making include whether a community can afford to rebuild, and whether the site might be a draw for people sympathetic to the crime that happened there. Ultimately, it's a community decision that turns out differently in different places.

Self-funded political newcomer seeks to oust longtime Republican US Rep. Tom Cole in Oklahoma

A five-way Republican primary for Oklahoma's 4th Congressional District is among the top races being watched in Tuesday's primary in Oklahoma. Among those challenging eleven-term U.S. Rep. Tom Cole is political newcomer Paul Bondar, who has loaned more than $5 million of his own money to his campaign. Cole is the chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee and has the endorsem*nt of former President Donald Trump. But Bondar's money has allowed him to blanket the television airwaves and social media with a barrage of ads touting his candidacy. Cole typically faces only token opposition but records show he has spent more than $3.1 million on the race.

GOP contest between Bob Good and John McGuire highlights primary slate in Virginia

One of America’s most conservative congressmen is facing a serious primary challenge in Virginia after his opponent was endorsed by former President Donald Trump. Voters in two other districts are nominating candidates to fill two open seats in the state's primary election Tuesday. Voters are also selecting a Republican nominee to the U.S. Senate to take on Democrat Tim Kaine. The marquee battle is in the state's 5th Congressional District. That's where congressman Bob Good is facing a challenge from state senator John McGuire. Trump endorsed McGuire and called Good a backstabber after Good endorsed Ron DeSantis instead of Trump for president.
