MORAN, Edgar Lee, 98. of Roanoke, died Thursday, July 17, 1997, in a local nursing home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Catherine Moran; one son, and two daughters. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home. State BOYDEN, Edward Lewis, 63, of 129 Bixler Ferry Road, Luray, died Thursday, July 17, 1997, at the University of Virginia Hospital. A son of the late George M. and Nanna Stewart Boyden, he was born March 23, 1934 in Roanoke. He had lived in Luray for 30 years, moving here from Roanoke.

Mr. Boyden graduated from Addison High School in Roanoke and furthered his education by receiving a B.S. degree at A University in Greensboro. He took graduate studies at James Madison University and Virginia Tech. He later received his Masters Degree from A University.

He was a retired instructor in Page County schools and was a former member of the Luray Town Council. He taught at West Luray and Luray Elementary schools. Mr. Boyden was a deacon and trustee of Bethel Baptist Church in Luray and Big Hill Baptist Church in Salem. His contributions and awards in his profession are numerous.

Mr. Boyden's impact and investment in a host of students and co-workers who occupy positions nationally will long remain with those who knew him. He was married to Esther Boyden, who survives. Also surviving are son, William W. Boyden of Washington, D.C., but is presently out of the country; two godsons, Kimarthi Thompson of California and James C.

Chinn of McLean; four goddaughters, Dana M. Waters of Culpeper, DeGale Cooper and Angela Cooper of Seattle, Wash, and lesha Williams of Luray; four sisters-in-law, Bennie Boyden of Prairie View, Texas, June Chinn of Luray, Irma Cooper of Norfolk, and Beverly Carey of Luray; one brotherin-law, John L. Dougans of Upper Marlboro, a devoted motherin-law, Julia M. Dougans of Luray; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mr.

Boyden was preceded in death by two brothers, Stewart Boyden and Dr. Lloyd Boyden. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 1997, at Bethel Baptist Church in Luray with the Rev. William (Sonny) Henkel, Rev.

Thomas W. Penn and Rev. Allen Baltimore officiating. Private burial will be held at a later date. The Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CHAPPELL, Margaret Carrie, 65, of Fries, died Thursday, July 17, 1997. Funeral 2 p.m. Sun- CHITTUM, Larry Joe, 59, of Newport. News, died Friday, July 18, 1997, at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News. He was born May 22, 1944, in Buena Vista, a son of the late Perry W.

Chittum and Lucille Ayers Chittum. He was a graduate of Parry McCluer High School and Roanoke Tech. He attended the Brethren Church. Joe began work with the Newport News Shipbuilding in 1967 as a member of the Nuclear Submarine Refueling and Overhaul Department. As a shift refueling engineer, he participated in many early submarine reactor refuelings, including those of the USS Lafayette and the USS Thomas Jefferson.

After his assignment to the Submarine Nuclear Overhaul Department, he became involved in the testing of submarine reactor plants as well. In his 30 years of service, Joe also participated several times on behalf of the shipyard in reactor servicing operations at the Naval Reactors Facility in Idaho. Since the late 1980s, Joe worked in the Reactor Services Project, where he was active in the planning and execution of reactor servicing operations for numerous nuclear-powered surface ships. During the third refueling of the USS Enterprise, the nation's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, Joe served as the lead and restoration group and engineer for the reactor preparations fuel installation group. This refueling has been described as "the largest and most complex nuclear reactor refueling ever undertaken." Most recently, Joe served as the lead, senior engineer in the reactor preparations group.

In this capacity, he led planning for the refueling of the nation's second nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and lead in her class, USS Nimitz. He is survived by one son, Gregory Joseph Chittum of Jacksonville, one brother, Gordon R. Chittum of Amelia, and two sisters, Caroleen C. Cornwell of Buena Vista and Loretta C. Deal of Lexington.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, July 20, 1997, at 2 p.m., at Bolling, Grose Lotts Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. David Bain officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.
