Waymon Clifton Aker

Waymon Clifton Aker,83, of Saltville died Saturday, July 27, 2024, at Bristol RegionalMedical Center in Bristol, Tennessee.

Aker was born July10, 1941, to the late Sherrill Clifton Aker and Cornelia AngelineHess Aker of the Bear Creek Community. Besides his parents, he waspreceded in death by his late wife, Janice Loraine Davidson Aker, andone brother, Avery Herman ‘Conductor’ Aker. He was also precededin death by his paternal grandparents, John Waymon Philip Aker andLaura Sarena Williams Aker, and his maternal grandparents, HermanBurk Hess and Martha Jane Havens Hess.

From his youth,Waymon was a hardworking man. He worked for McFarlane’s LoggingCompany, Visador Company, Junior Hayden Excavation and CuddyExcavation. He was an expert heavy equipment operator—using hisskill to help many people over the years. After his retirement, hewas a handy man that enjoyed working in his woodshed, as well asworking on lawnmowers, chainsaws and weed eaters for his neighborsand friends.

Aker is survived byone son, Teddy Aker; one grandson, Andrew Aker; one great-grandson,Dominic Isaiah Aker; one brother, Glenn William Aker (Patricia) ofSouth Carolina; one sister-in-law, Rita Aker Thompson of Adwolf; andseveral nieces and nephews as well as a host of friends andassociates.

Funeral serviceswill be conducted at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, at Henderson FuneralHome with the Revs. Rick Cuddy and Wade Kestner officiating. Thefamily will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. prior to the service.A committal service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July31, at Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring. Those serving aspallbearers will be Donnie Aker, Mike Aker, Richard Aker, Gary(George) Olinger, Adam Holmes, and Cody Holmes.

Lila Mae Brooks, 74,died Friday, July 26, 2024, at Johnston Memorial Hospital inAbingdon.

Brooks was born inChilhowie to the late Robert Crouse and Doshie Weaver Crouse, and waspreceded in death by her first husband, Robert Eugene Blevins;sisters, Betty Trivett, Nancy McAllister, and Bonnie Hinchey; andbrothers, Ray, Bud, Roy, Jack, Earl, Buford, Harold, and Ed Crouse.

She was a devotedmember of Calvary Baptist Church, a cherished wife, mother, andgrandmother who dedicated her life to caring for her daughter, Angie.

Robert Eugene CookJr., 55, died July 27, 2024, due to a recent illness.

Cook was born inLansdale, Pennsylvania, on Feb. 3, 1969 to Faye Cook and the lateRev. Robert Cook He will be remembered as a beloved son, brother, anduncle. Cook was very loving and protective of his family and closefriends. He was an avid racing fan, he enjoyed antiquing, and guncollecting.

Survivors includehis mother, Faye Cook; sister, Evelyn Ashby (Steve Ashby), niece,April (Billy); nephews, Stephen Ashby II (Kellie), Scott Ashby(Stephanie); great-nieces, Madison, Haille, and Taegan; andgreat-nephews, Gavin, Easton, and Tanner.

Phyllis MedleyDaugherty, 79, died Friday, July 26, 2024.

Daugherty made manyfriends while working with Virginia House Furniture for more than 25years and finally retiring in 2013 as a supervisor for Scholle inChilhowie. Daugherty loved her family and friends and enjoyedspending time with them. She loved to read and work in the yard withher flowers.

She was preceded indeath by her husband, Jan Daugherty; parents, Robert and Lois Medley;infant son, Jan Daugherty Jr.; father and mother-in-law, French andBlanche Daugherty; and brothers, Bobby Medley and Jerry Medley.

Daugherty issurvived by her daughters, Kim Daugherty Shumate and husband, Steve,and Sherri Henderson and fiancé Mike Storie, all of Marion;sisters-in-law, Peggy Daugherty Johnson of Chilhowie and DonnaDaugherty Smith of Johnson City, Tennessee; grandson, Tony Riley ofBristol, Virginia; furbabies, Rocky and Abby; several nieces, nephewsand their families; and too many special friends to list.

Harlan Heath Goad,84 of Roanoke died Thursday, July 25, 2024.

Goad was born onOct. 2, 1939, to Nelles Heath and Vivian Virginia Thompson Goad whopreceded him in death. Also preceding him in death are his brotherand sister-in-law, Wayne and Virginia Goad; sister, MaybelleneSmythers; brothers-in-law, Avis Quesenberry and Curtis Roop; anddaughter-in-law, Connie Huff Goad.

Goad lived his younglife in the Indian Valley area of Floyd County. He made the RoanokeValley his home after being married. He was employed at RoanokeElectric Steel for 15 years. After which, he went into the timberbusiness retiring at the age of 70. He was a hard worker and taughthis children the same. He enjoyed fishing with his children andgrandchildren. In the fall he could be found in the woods hunting ashe worked. Gardening was also a favorite thing for him to doespecially growing tomatoes having a goal to get a ripe one by July4th which he usually did. Goad accepted the Lord as his Savior on anEaster Sunday morning, April 11, 1971. For the last 22 years heattended Fellowship Baptist Church as long as his health permitted.

Beth Garland Hurst,67, of Wytheville died July 24, 2024, at Wythe County CommunityHospital.

Hurst was born inWythe County to the parents of George Kelly Garland and MaudeSpraker.

Hurst graduated fromGeorge Wythe High School and went on to attend WCC to obtain hernursing degree. Hurst worked as a Register Nurse at WCCH for 28years; where she worked in the ER on night shift. She loved helpingothers and enjoyed all that nursing had to hold for her. Hurst lovedher family and friends; most of all she loved her grandchildren.

"Stormin” Norman Moulton, 95, died Friday, July 26, 2024, at the Skyline TerraceNursing Facility in Woodstock, Virginia.

Moulton was born inBoston, Massachusetts, to the late Oscar Moulton and Zena TibbettsMoulton and was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Suzanne BlevinsMoulton, and his daughter, Michelle Croson Wright.

He was a U.S. Navyveteran and served during the Korean War era and later retired fromthe Sears and Roebuck Corporation. He enjoyed reading, bird watching,and raising chickens with his wife.

J.C. Newman

J.C. Newman diedJuly 27, 2024, at home.

He was born on June27, 1945 in Galax.

A loving father andhusband, he dedicated his life to his family and his work ethic.

Wilfred Newman Parks

Wilfred NewmanParks, 69, died Saturday, July 27, 2024, at Lewis Gale MedicalCenter in Salem.

Parks was born inRichlands to the late Joseph and Casiann "Jo" Parks. He waspreceded in death by his brother, Eddie Parks, and his sister,Vanessa Hall.

Parks had a longcareer, working at Merilatt and Coffman Stairs before retiring fromPepsi after 35 years as a diesel mechanic. Later, he worked inmaintenance at Food City. Known for his friendly and outgoing nature,Parks was well-liked by everyone who met him. He attended the MarionChurch of the Nazarene and will be deeply missed by his family andfriends.

Survivors includehis wife of 31 years, Ruby Parks; nieces and nephews, Candy, Christy,Natasha, and Adam; other loving family members and many friends; andhis special pet, Chester.

David Radford

David Radford, 79,of Floyd died Thursday, July 25, 2024.

He was born Jan. 28,1945, into a rather large family. His mother and father, Elsie andAlbert Radford have preceded him in death along with his first wife,Lindal Radford; a daughter, Tangie Radford; one infant sister; abrother, Everett "Buddy” Radford; and another sister, MildredFerguson.

Surviving members ofhis family include his wife, Arlene Radford; daughters Lisa Radford(Wayne Gillespie) and Pamela Snead (Ross).

After marryingArlene, Radford gained a bonus daughter, Teresa Epperly (Danny) andtwo sons, Glenn Linkous and Brock Sweeney (Amber). He is alsosurvived by his sisters, Mary Grooms, Nancy Wade, and Betty JeanMartin (Richard); and brothers, William "Bo” Radford (Ernestine)and Jimmy Radford (Martha).

Radford loved hisfamily and especially the children. He was always so happy whengrandchildren and great-grandchildren visited. His grandchildreninclude Sabrina Schulze, Vicky McAlexander, Jacob McAlexander,Heather Vest, Aaron Vest, Nicole Crawford, Jonathon Snead, BrandyHall, Alexis Epperly, Kendall Epperly, Kellie Whittaker, LoganSweeney, Kaylee Sweeney, Tara Cisco, and Brittney Parham. He also hadquite a lineup of great-grandchildren, Shauna, Garrett, Kylie, Wyatt,and Arick Schulze, Lilah and Emberly Hollandsworth, QuintonFitzgerald, Markelle and Rayshawn Vest, Sage, Wilder and HankCrawford, Coy Snead, Aria Vest, Shaylee, Malachi, and Judah Hall,Mason and Julie Whittaker, Ryleigh, Colter, and Carson Parham, andHaley Cisco.

Radford was a hardworker. He worked at Stanleytown Furniture and the Radford Arsenalearlier in his life. However, he spent his later years working forthe Blue Ridge Parkway until retirement. He never seemed ready forretirement, though, and used his carpentry and building skills onprojects throughout his lifetime. Radford built and remodeled manyhouses along the way. He and Arlene lived in many of those housesalong with other family members.

Radford was alwaysavailable to help his family and others in any way possible whetherit be mowing the yard, cutting wood, or other odd jobs that needed tobe done. He loved doing his yard sales with Arlene in the bottomportion of their home. That was his passion later on in life. Radfordworked hard in his church, too. He was a deacon and a staple withinhis church community. His absence will definitely be felt by many.

Burial was inWilliams Cemetery.

Ruth Reedy Reeves

Ruth Reedy Reeves,90, of Fries died Thursday, July 25, 2024 at home.

Reeves was born onApril 7, 1934 in Rugby to Blaine Denton and Jincy Cleo Young Reedy.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,Jessie Willard Reeves Sr.; son Terry Reeves; daughter Pam Shaffner;12 siblings and special friend Carlin Marshall.

She is survived bysons and daughters-in-law Rusty and Darlene Reeves of Wytheville,Chris and Jeanne Reeves of Max Meadows and Greg Reeves of Fries;brother and sister-in-law Jerry and Jean Reedy of Salem; eightgrandchildren, Jennifer Shaffner, Lisa Reeves, Jerome Shaffner, ChadReeves and Brittany Roberts, Julie and Ben Brewer, Amanda andChristian Hall, Carly and Whitney Reeves and Luke and Ashlyn Reeves;13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; son-in-law DavidShaffner; and special caretaker Amy Drummond.

The funeral servicewill be held Sunday, Aug. 4 at 3 p.m. in the Fries PentecostalHoliness Church with the Rev. Jeff Wilson officiating. Burial willfollow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends onSunday from 2 p.m. until the time for the funeral service at thechurch.

Donald Seagle Scott

Donald Seagle Scott,94, son of the late S.A. and Mabel Scott, died July 24, 2024 at theVeterans Affairs Medical Hospital in Salem.

Scott grew up at theWytheville Fish Hatchery where his father was superintendent. Hegraduated from Wytheville High School, then attended VirginiaPolytechnic Institute in the Cadet Corps. Scott went on to the U.S.Air Force where he served four years during the Korean War. He spentmost of his service at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida working onlarge missiles. He was honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant,receiving the National Defense Service Medal for service duringspecific periods of armed conflict or national emergency, and theGood Conduct Medal for exemplary behavior, efficiency, and fidelityin active Federal military service.

Back in Virginia,Scott went to work for Norfolk and Western Railroad, first as afireman on steam engines and later as an engineer on diesellocomotives. Scott was employed by the railroad for 35 years. During his time on the steam engines, he was photographed by O.Winston Link whose work is housed in a museum in Roanoke. One ofthose photographs appeared on the cover of an album of train sounds. Scott also engineered a commemorative steam engine touring the areafor the nation’s Bicentennial.

When he had time,Scott could turn his talents to a variety of projects in wood, metal,mechanical and even electronic items, building everything frombookcases to calculators. He was described as a ‘Jack of alltrades.’ In his retirement, Scott enjoyed shooting skeet withfriends and operating his ham radio.

Scott is survived byhis daughter and her family including two grandchildren, and agreat-grandchild. A private family service will be scheduled for alater date.

Kaye AndersonWellborn

Kaye AndersonWellborn, 92, of Independence died July 24, 2024.

She was born onelection day Nov. 2, 1931, in Flat Ridge, the fifth child of six ofthe late Lee Arthur Anderson and Vergie Emma Hash Anderson. She waspredeceased by her husband Fred Hill Wellborn.

Wellborn was aproud graduate of Oak Hill Academy, Mouth of Wilson. She was knownand loved by family as "MawMaw Kaye.” She was a long-time memberof First Baptist Church of Independence, where she taught Sundayschool and Bible school, kept the nursery, and help lead the Women’sMinistry. She was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary to theVeterans of Foreign Wars Post 7726.

She is survived byher younger sister Lucie B. Wright; daughter Doris Thornton Halseyand her husband, William "Buddy” Halsey, of Independence; sonMark Alan Thornton and Lisa Sutton of Charleston, West Virginia;daughter Luci Renae Wellborn of Independence; six grandchildren,Jared Wellborn Hanna, Derrik Alan Thornton, William McTier Halsey,Hardin Lee Halsey, Emma Hanna Morissette and Mattie Ferguson Hanna;three great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. Arrangementsare being handled by Reins Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence. A memorial service will be held Aug. 10 at First Baptist Church ofIndependence. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. with aservice to follow at 11 a.m.

Ronald Otis Willard

Ronald Otis Willard,75, of Galax died Thursday, July 25, 2024, at home.

Willard was born inCarroll County on May 7, 1949, to Jay Marvin and Martha Ruth BurchamWillard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by asister Betty Lou Yates and brothers Harry Paul Vass and Grady Vass.

He proudly servedhis country in the US Army.

He is survived byhis wife of 54 years Mary Jane Cheeks Willard; sons anddaughters-in-law Stacy and Rena Willard, Tommy Joe and MichelleWillard, all of Galax; sister Pauline Osmer of Gurly, Alabama; eightgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews andcousins; and special caregiver Christy Thomas..

A memorial gravesideservice will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m in the Fairlawn Church ofChrist Cemetery with the Rev. Kent Allender officiating. MilitaryRites will be conducted by the Hillsville VFW Post 1115. There willbe no visitation at the funeral home.
