Externs will be included to participate in staff meetings, trainings, educational opportunities related to their job responsibilities. An extern would have a primary or \"home\" location where they will spend most of their externship year learning and working. There are options for pre-arranged rotations at another hearing aid center if there is a clinical experience the primary location does not offer, for example, cochlear implants.

Does the externship site provide orientation to relevant clinical policies and procedures? Yes

Does the externship site provide orientation to quality assessment, quality assurance and quality improvement? Yes
Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship: Proficiency in basic comprehensive audiometric assessment, proficiency in hearing aid consultations, fittings, orientations, and troubleshooting. Exposure to vestibular assessment, tinnitus assessment and treatment, implantable hearing solutions, and pediatric audiologic assessment and rehabilitation.
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: We will teach the student everything we need them to know and expect to learn!

Kaiser Permanente has 21 Hearing Centers throughout Northern California. Whether you work in Santa Rosa, Oakland, Fresno, or one of the many other communities in Northern California, we provide the same high-quality service at each of our Hearing Centers.

Because each of our centers focuses on slightly different hearing specialties, not all services discussed on our website are offered at all locations. We have 19 externship positions available across our Hearing Centers. Our externship program is robust, multidisciplinary, and paid. We have had an externship program since 2008 which has grown every year since. An extern would have a primary or "home" location where they will spend most of their externship year learning and working. There are options for pre-arranged rotations at another hearing aid center if there is a clinical experience the primary location does not offer, for example, cochlear implants.

Education

  • Bachelors degree required.
  • Completion of three (3) years in a doctoral level audiology program or two (2) years in an accelerated doctoral level audiology program required.

License, Certification, Registration

  • Temporary Audiologist License (California) required at hire
  • Basic Life Support Certification required at hire

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment

NOTE:

  • Our organization does not require our audiologists to have ASHA CCCs, but some of our audiologists at various sites do maintain their CCCs.
  • The size of each team varies, the number of audiologists and students listed below is an estimate of the entire system. All sites have an audiology leader (Chief or Supervisor).
  • We often accept 2nd and 3rd year students for their clinical rotations from various AuD programs.
